The ongoing Bangladesh Resilient Infrastructure for Adaptation and Vulnerability Reduction Project (P173312) aims increase the resilience of vulnerable through: (i) resilient flood shelters and community infrastructure and (ii) strengthening capacity for disaster preparedness and response of government agencies and communities. To ensure that persons with disabilities are included, the project conducted a field survey to better understand the needs of the community, including persons with disabilities and the barriers they face during disasters. To address the identified barriers, participation of persons with disabilities in the design of shelters and the adoption of universal accessibility in construction were incorporated in the project design. The project will also collect data on women’s shelter usage, incorporating disability disaggregated data analysis requirements into data collection guides and tools, to facilitate understanding of the status and needs of women, including women with disabilities, with regards to shelter usage at the community level. This will enable community organizations to incorporate the needs of women, including women with disabilities, into disaster risk management designs and activities.
